We speak to current advertiser Naomi Browner, owner of Sydney Hair Salon, A Head of the Rest who shares her advice for those who are looking to start their own business and the key to keeping her salon a head of the rest.
What motivated you to start your own salon?
Since I started my career in the hairdressing industry, I have always dreamed of having my own salon. The motivation was to get to the top of the industry ladder (as I saw it), and create a comfortable and inviting space of my own.
As a small business owner, what is the biggest challenge you face when it comes to owning and running your own business?
The biggest challenge I face would be juggling the many hats of a small business owner and knowing when to put on what hat. I don’t like confrontation, but when dealing with many people (clients and staff included), I have had to push myself outside of my happy bubble and do what needs to be done for the best of the business.
What advice would you give to those who are looking to start their own small business?
Don’t chase the money – stay true to your passion and let that drive you.
There is so much choice for customers, what puts your salon a head of the rest?
I truly believe we are a head of the rest, as my team are always motivated to go beyond the call of duty to make our clients experience as comfortable as possible. For example, we provide phone chargers, laptop tables and paint their nails. My staff have been conditioned to pre-empt our client’s needs. If a client comes in to the salon feeling tired, we take them to the basin, pop a towel under their head and let them have a nap. All of this is in addition to the team receiving regular opportunities for advanced training. We have also recently partnered with a company called Sustainable Salons who have helped us to reduce our waste to zero, recycling everything from hair to chemicals to foil and paper. We’re not only good for you we’re also good for the environment.
What are you hoping to achieve by advertising with Medical Media?
By advertising with Medical Media, I am hoping to reach out to prospective clients that may not know about us and help them reach their hair goals!
